I would like to leave an after glow of smiles when life is done. I would like to leave an echo, whispering softly down the ways, Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I would like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun of happy memories that I leave when life is done.

Mary Kathleen Roller Hermann, 83, of Westminster, California, left us peacefully on February 18, surrounded by family. A beloved mother and grandmother, Kathleen or “Kathie” will always be remembered for her love of Oklahoma and stocks as well as her deep appreciation for different styles of artwork. Born on February 25, 1942, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kathie grew up as the only daughter of Kenneth Roller and Harriett Manning and sister to Forrest Roller. When she wasn’t helping around the house or caring for her family’s dogs, Kathie could be found playing sports with the neighborhood boys. This competitiveness helped develop her strong work ethic and can-do attitude which she displayed throughout her life. After becoming the first female graduate of the Oklahoma State University Fire and Safety School, Kathie spent many years developing a career in loss prevention before discovering a passion for stocks and day trading. It was this passion that gave her immense joy later in her life. As a proud former resident of Oklahoma, Kathie would entertain her family with tales of her grandmother’s time at the Carlisle Indian School and her grandfather’s occupation as a petroleum landman. These stories helped her sons have a strong sense of pride in their family heritage and she would typically end them with a twinkle in her eyes and her trademark sly laugh. Kathie is survived by her three sons, Joseph Smith, Nicholas Smith, and Patrick Smith; two daughters-in-laws, Kellie Smith and Leah Smith; three grandchildren, Wesley Smith, Cate Smith and Aiden Smith. She is preceded in death by her two husbands, Joseph Smith and Professor Al Hermann. A service to celebrate Kathie’s life will be held on February 28 at Rose Hill Burial Park in Oklahoma City. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Indian College Fund, a charity which supports two of her passions, education and Indigenous peoples.
